A: Today in class, we did an experiment where we examined the changes and differences between a solid, liquid, and gas. For example, when a liquid turns into a gas it is evaporating, or when a gas is turning into a liquid it's called condensation, etc. We also learned that temperature increases molecular motion, while pressure determines how much distance the molecules move outward.
B: When experimenting with dry ice, we put it in water which caused the process of sublimation where the dry ice turned from a solid to a gas. So when the dry ice was dropped into water, the water started to bubble and gas rose from the surface.
C: We also put dry ice in balloons and measured the volume of the balloon before the dry ice turned into gas, and after. My group started off with a 2cm balloon and ended with a 24cm balloon. So the volume as a solid was about 4.2cm when rounded, and the gas was 7,241.14cm also when rounded. When you divide these numbers, you get the distance between molecules which in this case was 1,724.1cm. I think the coolest part of this experiment was when we watched the reaction of the dry ice when it was put in water because it produced a lot of gas that we could see. Overall my experience with dry ice was really great.
